time stands still.

In isolated coastal towns time moves slower. the days are longer. thinner. everything is mild. temperate. still. dare i say it.

dull.

in this situation, one place comes to mind.
the shibuya crossing.
the people, the starbucks, and the fantastic shoes.

Nihon? Onegaishimasu!

As much as it pains me to drag myself away from the readings of Dynamic Information Worlds - I must digress. Rumi of fashion toast fame is in Japan. Now honestly, when the worlds of girl with most incredible wardrobe and said country combine, I am without defence. I know jealousy is a sin - but how can one not be jealous of a girl who has relatives to stay with in Tokyo and an endless supply of lover frocks, miu miu shoes and karen walker sunglasses? I certainly don't have the willpower.

Konban Wa!

I started learning Japanese today. Instant attraction. Lust at first sight and so on. Embarrasingly enough, on the way home from uni I made a stop at the Japanese supermarket to indulge my cultural sweet tooth and then rushed up to my room with a cup of tea to start practicing my hiragana. Welcome back Japan obsession. Not only that, but I had forgotten how much I enjoyed learning a new language in the three years I have remained nothing but an English speaking simpleton. Uni is great too. After falling into the pattern of working in retail 6 days a week you forget how much there is to learn and the potential of creativity and uni life.
Above images are from two of my favourite Japanese themed blogs makeiteasy and hellosandwich. Ebony Bizys of Hello Sandwich (and of the amazing Vogue Living.) is putting together a Tokyo guide which I am beyond excited for. Keep a little eye on her blog for more deatils.

copycat.

if you are at all interested in Japan, you'll know Lotte is a major sweet company that make some really delicious products if you have a sweet tooth like me. This was a lemon and lime 'coolish'. They have nothing like this in Australia, which I find strange! It tastes kind of like a very thick, frozen slushy.

My shinkansen breakfast. Cheese baguette and cafe au lait (love) from Andersons. I stole the cream cheese from mum simply for photographic purposes. I don't like cheese that much.

I forget exactly what this was! Chicken, rice, sliced nori and miso. It may have been teryaki but I can't actually remember. Which is terrible, because I do remember it was incredible!

Pork katsu set. One katsu cutlet with miso, cabbage and rice.
Although my photography and styling skills are no where near as chic, I thought I'd post a little of my own food porn. Hope you enjoyed.

i heart suntory.

The return of my Japan fever has led me to some really fantastic food porn. It Will Stop Raining* is my favourite food blog so far. Add a few recipes to the already perfect styling and photography and it would make a beautiful book or magazine. I especially love the first picture taken on the shinkansen. The little onigiri and suntory water are so reminiscent of my Japanese experience.

the importance of nothingness.

Yes, I stole my heading from a line off the sublime make it easy blog. I found these photos here, which are simply perfect for inspiring my haiku writing. They also make me want to learn to use my diana camera better. Soft, floaty images of nothingness are truly amazing. The photos are by Mari of little island management. Now thats how I like my Androdgyny. Hot.

This is from an Editorial from the Vogue Nippon I picked up in Japan. Shot by Mark Segal, it features Tao Okamoto, one of Japan's most sought after models of the moment. I find Androgyny can often lack creativity in many lesser editorials. I mean, if it's just a girl in boys clothing, it's been done. Her name was Coco Chanel and she revolutionised fashion. It really has to offer something more to be really effective. Basically, this appealed to me as it was half shot in a black and white noir style, complete with cigarettes and a greasy quiff. Possibly the most striking shots were those of Tao's chest exposed. The make - up, hair and clothing had began to fool you into thinking she was a man then bang - breasts. Subversive and a wee bit explicit, perfection.

Are you a Mori Girl?

I can't choose my favourite Japanese fashion. It is one hundred per cent impossible and I cannot, and will not do it. One I fell in love with, especially when wondering the streets of Harajuku, or flicking through magazines like Spoon and Fudge, was Mori Girl (Forest Girl). Apparently it started around 2006 when a girl on a fashion page was told she looked like she could live in the woods. It now boasts a monolithic online community and a myriad stores. On a Japanese news website I found this checklist.

Are you are Mori Girl?
  • You are fair skinned
  • Your hair is soft and wavy
  • You prefer dark or natural colours
  • You keep your nails short
  • You like to wear loose dresses
  • You don't like fashion that is too 'sweet'
  • You prefer leather bags
  • You like antiques and pocket watches
  • You use round blush on your cheeks
    and my personal favourite
  • Puffed sleeves make your heart ache

naaaaawwwwwwwww

Its a kinda specific list, but idea is still awesome. I think toned down, its basically a natural, layered style which is pretty easy to achieve and suits almost everyone. Think linens and crotchet. Don't forget the puffy sleeves!

Inside the home of a Japanese DJ.

Its Friday! Hurray! Good things tend to happen on fridays. Like today, although it is blustery and freezing I did not get rained on once. I found everything I was looking for in the asian supermarket after work. Then I went to the newsagent hoping for something nice to read and there were just too many to choose from. They even had Lula. But the cover was ripped so I just couldn't do it. If its one thing I can't stand, it's magazine cruelty.

And if thats not enough... The Selby went to Japan! Go check it out. Only two sets of shots are up, which at first saddened me until I realised it is because he is releasing a book next March. Yaaaay. Just in time for my birthday. (hint hiiiiint) hehe. I love the Tokyo house of Dj Maar (of Japanese duo Dexpistols) and Mayu Kondo - an art director and designer. Its so Japanese. A contradiction of traditional and uber modern. My favourite.
